I am going with Federer. He was untouchable off of clay and only lost on clay to a very spry Rafa Nadal.

Novak’s loss in Basel and his retirement vs. Delpo in Davis Cup have handed this to Federer. He looks like his body is falling apart.

Novak on one hand has only lost 2 match points all year. On the other hand, he retired vs. Murray and Delpo, looked dead vs. Nishikori, and then pulled out of Paris after a not so sturdy effort. I think in terms of fortitude he does not get this imaginary honor. Still, Nole had an incredible year.
