Wimbledon 2013: Day 1 Predictions

Predicted Winners in BOLD

GENTLEMEN’S SINGLES – FIRST ROUND

Victor Hanescu (ROU)  v Roger Federer (SUI) [3] – Federer had a tough first round in 2010 as defending champion.  Still, he advanced.

Benjamin Becker (GER) v Andy Murray (GBR) [2] – Murray should win against the man who sent Agassi into retirement in 2006.

Rafael Nadal (ESP) [5] v Steve Darcis (BEL) – Rafa like Murray and Federer should advance.

Lleyton Hewitt (AUS) v Stanislas Wawrinka (SUI) [11] – Stan did just finish as a runner-up at a grass court event, but I think Hewitt is perhaps the worst draw any seed could get in the first round.

Marcos Baghdatis (CYP) v Marin Cilic (CRO) [10] – This is not a great draw, but I think Cilic will win based on his play at Queen’s Club and based on Baghdatis’ falling of the map.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA) [6] v David Goffin (BEL) – This is once again a tricky first round draw for a seeded player.  Tsonga has gone 10-2 at the past two Wimbledon events.  If he plays up to his ability, Tsonga will advance.  Goffin will take advantage if Tsonga is not on his game.

Kyle Edmund (GBR) v Jerzy Janowicz (POL) [24] – Jerzy should advance.

Janko Tipsarevic (SRB) [14] v Viktor Troicki (SRB) – This is a tough draw for both players a lot of reasons.

Fabio Fognini (ITA) [30] v Jurgen Melzer (AUT) – If this were on clay, I’d pick Fognini.  On grass, I am taking Melzer in a mild upset.

James Ward (GBR) v Yen-Hsun Lu (TPE)

Robin Haase (NED) v Mikhail Youzhny (RUS) [20] – This could be a tough match, but Youzhny did play quite well at Halle.

Nicolas Almagro (ESP) [15] Jurgen Zopp (EST) – The hard luck kid of the ATP tour gets a win.

Lukas Lacko (SVK) v Rajeev Ram (USA) – Ram has a nice grass court game, but the pride of Indianapolis is unlikely to pull an upset at this stage of his career.

Pablo Andujar (ESP) v Adrian Mannarino (FRA)

Nicolas Mahut (FRA) v Jan Hajek (CZE) – Mahut is coming off his first singles title.

Stephane Robert (FRA) v Alejandro Falla (COL)

Lukasz Kubot (POL) v Igor Andreev (RUS) – Andreev;s forehand is something to see in person, but I don’t see him winning this match.

Edouard Roger-Vasselin (FRA) v Ernests Gulbis (LAT) – Gulbis has played well as of late.

Marc Gicquel (FRA) v Vasek Pospisil (CAN)

Dustin Brown (GER) v Guillermo Garcia-Lopez (ESP)

Rogerio Dutra Silva (BRA) v Sergiy Stakhovsky (UKR)

Andrey Kuznetsov (RUS) v Albert Montanes (ESP)

Adrian Ungur (ROU) v Benoit Paire (FRA) [25]

Juan Monaco (ARG) [22] v Bastian Knittel (GER)

John Isner (USA) [18] v Evgeny Donskoy (RUS) – I’ll take Isner, but will not be shocked if he drops a set or two.

Tobias Kamke (GER) v Julien Benneteau (FRA) [31]

Fernando Verdasco (ESP) v Xavier Malisse (BEL) – I am taking the X-Man in a nod to experience.

Tommy Robredo (ESP) [32] v Alex Bogomolov Jr. (RUS) – Robredo continues his comeback.

Marinko Matosevic (AUS) v Guillaume Rufin (FRA)

Radek Stepanek (CZE) v Matt Reid (AUS)

Julian Reister (GER) v Lukas Rosol (CZE)

Kenny De Schepper (FRA) v Paolo Lorenzi (ITA)
