Ferrer made the better start with stronger serving and had the first opportunity to break after Djokovic misjudged a slice into the net – the world number 2 then double faulted to give Ferrer a 3-1 lead. But the world number 3 soon found himself in trouble, making unforced errors from 40-0 up which helped Djokovic to break back.
The set continued on serve, with Djokovic’s serve improving from the start of the match. At 5-5, the world number 2 made the breakthrough on Ferrer’s serve. The world number 3 made two unforced errors to go down 0-30 and then 0-40 after netting a down-the-line forehand following a gruelling 22 shot rally.
