…and not before time, either. If you really must, then call it the ‘Murray effect’, but the men’s game from a British perspective is becoming less of a one-man show. The clearest example of this is the recent Davis Cup match victory over the USA, the first win by a British team in a World Group tie since 1986, marking this island – superficially at least – as one of the top eight nations in world tennis.

The truth is far less simple – and less optimistic – than that, however. Andy Murray remains Britain’s only true hope at a major tournament, whilst from the British Number Two spot downwards (a long way downwards) players are still having to rely on qualifiers and wildcards to play at the highest level.
