Roland Garros 2014 – Day 9 Men’s Predictions

Court Philippe Chatrier

[1] Rafael Nadal (ESP) vs Dusan Lajovic (SRB) – I think Rafa wins in 3 sets, but the Serbian upstart might take a set.

[23] Gael Monfils (FRA) vs  Guillermo Garcia-Lopez (ESP) – I almost picked GG-L, but I think Gael is riding a wave of good feelings and is playing some of the best tennis of his career.

Court Suzanne Lenglen

[5] David Ferrer (ESP) vs [19] Kevin Anderson (RSA) – Ferrer will have to find a way to crack Anderson’s serve, but I think Ferrer will do that.  I think Anderson reaching the round of 16 on clay has to be viewed as over-achieving.  He already had a solid 2014 under his belt and should be looking forward to the grass-hard court-indoor swing for the 2nd half of the season.  Ferrer will be looking forward to playing Rafa especially since he won in Monte Carlo.

[7] Andy Murray (GBR) vs [24] Fernando Verdasco (ESP) – Verdasco owes Murray for Wimbledon last year.  I think Murray is alive and kicking and Rome and Paris have got him back at a high level.  Verdasco destroyed Gasquet and is mastering spin in a big way.  On clay, I give him a slight edge.

I love how Le Monf and the home RG crowd are giving each other energy. 🙂

It looks like Ferru pulled through after a tough match.

Agreed also that Murray v. FeVer is going to be a tough call. The defending Wimbledon champion seems to have improved on this surface; FeVer seems to have improved measurably (racquet switch?) after what seemed to be a near-meltdown last year.

    Vamos a ver …

That one is hard to call right now – junior rivals – two guys who move so well but were too defensive in their play.
