There were plenty of reasons to doubt the arrival of any of these four semifinalists. Safarova is seeded 23rd. She was supposed to go out in the 3rd round. Kvitova has played largely forgettable tennis since the 2011 season finale. Bouchard was part of the group of death with Serena and Maria Sharapova. Halep is not a prototypical grass court player. Yet, here they are, and they deserve congratulations!
Lucie Safarova (CZE) [23] v Petra Kvitova (CZE) [6]
I’d be a fool to keep picking against Safarova, well I am a fool. The 2011 champion played the match of the tournament with Venus Williams. That type of win should instill confidence. Her lefty serve, touch and power are ideal for grass. Also, Kvitova has experience in this situation. It is possible that Safarova could freeze up in such a big situation. My prediction: Kvitova d. Saraova 7-5, 6-2
Eugenie Bouchard (CAN) [13] v Simona Halep (ROU) [3]
This is a hard one for me to predict. Halep is maybe the form player on tour. She is the player least likely to throw in an awful performance. Halep did toss in a terrible Australian Open quarterfinal this year, but her Roland Garros showing means she is likely past that roadblock. Bouchard on grass is perhaps a better player than Halep. They are two rising stars. Each holds a 15-2 record in 2014 Grand Slam play. One will be 16-2 after tomorrow. My guess, and it is really just a guess, is that Halep’s consistency, speed and tenacity give her a slight edge. My prediction: Halep d. Bouchard 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. However, Bouchard could blow Halep off the court. I cannot see the reverse happening.
