US Open 2014: Day 3 Men’s Predictions

Predicted Winners in BOLD

[6] Tomas Berdych (CZE) vs. Lleyton Hewitt (AUS) – MATCH OF THE DAY ALERT I would not be shocked to see Hewitt win, but Berdych should be able to dictate play and win in 3 or 4 sets.  However, if LLeyton can hold serve consistently and get sets to 4-4 or further, he might be able to use a scoreboard pressure to sneak out sets and maybe the match.

 Memories

[3] Stan Wawrinka (SUI) vs. Thomaz Bellucci (BRA) – Stan needs to be careful here, but I think he wins in 3 or 4 sets.

[14] Marin Cilic (CRO) vs. Marcos Baghdatis (CYP) – This should be fun.

[7] Grigor Dimitrov (BUL) vs. [WC] Ryan Harrison (USA) – Harrison is no easy draw for Grigor, but Harrison has had terrible luck with draws.  Granted, a win by Harrison could change the direction of his career.

[19] Feliciano Lopez (ESP) Ivan Dodig (CRO) – This could go five sets.

[11] Ernests Gulbis (LAT) vs Kenny De Schepper (FRA) – Gulbis is never a sure thing.

Evgeny Donskoy (RUS) vs. Alexander Kudryavtsev (RUS) –

Jerzy Janowicz (POL) vs. Dusan Lajovic (SRB) – I am expecting a bit of Jerzy rebound now that the Wimbledon points from 2013 are off of his slate and his health hs improved.

[32]Joao Sousa (POR) vs Frank Dancevic (CAN) – Good for Frank to still be out there, but his lack of a backhand and Sousa’s nasty spin (I saw it from the first row in Cincy) will spell his doom.

Steve Darcis (BEL) vs. Martin Klizan (SVK) – This is a great match.  If I had tickets, I’d be watching this one.  I’m torn on this 50-50 match.

[Q] Niels Desein (BEL) vs. David Goffin (BEL) – Everyone’s favorite mini-Davydenko should win the Battle of Belgium.

Lukas Lacko (SVK) vs. Dominic Thiem (AUT) – I am taking the youth movement here, but Lacko is a solid player who can win.

Illya Marchenko (UKR) vs. [Q] Marco Chiudinelli (SUI)

[30] Jeremy Chardy (FRA) vs Blaz Kavcic (SLO) – Chardy’s big open stance forehand should be enough.

[27] Santiago Giraldo (COL) vs  Teymuraz Gabashvili (RUS)

Carlos Berlocq (ARG) vs. Dudi Sela (ISR) – I love Berlocq.

[18]Kevin Anderson (RSA) vs Pablo Cuevas (URU) – If Anderson has recovered from his collapse versus Dimitrov in Toronto, he can do damage in New York.

Steve Johnson (USA) vs. Tatsuma Ito (JPN) – The NCAA folk hero has a winnable match here.
