Predicted Winners in BOLD
This is a great slate of matches as one would expect at a slam
Grigor Dimitrov (7) vs. David Goffin – Goffin has been impressive in NY. His youthful appearance should not fool anyone. He can play and has a Davydenko style of taking the ball early and robbing time from his opponent. Dimitrov seems poised to live up to his hype in the bright lights of NY. I think this goes 4 or 5 sets, but I am leaning ever so slightly toward Dimitrov.
Feliciano Lopez (19) vs. Dominic Thiem – Thiem pulled a great comeback vs. Gulbis. I am not sure how much he has left in the tank. Lopez, starting at the Queen’s Club, has been playing very high level tennis. I think he’s more fresh and playing too well not to pick.
Tomas Berdych (6) vs. Teymuraz Gabashvili – The Big Czech went 5 sets and now faces an opponent not to be underrated. Berdych will need to avoid lulls and lapses to advance.
Roger Federer (2) vs. Marcel Granollers – Federer will have to avoid any large error prone sections in this match to have a clean win. I think his increased rate of net approaches helps him avoid his forehand spraying errors.
Roberto Bautista-Agut (17) vs. Adrian Mannarino – Bautista-Agut’s magical mystery tour of 2014 continues in a hard fought baseline brawl.
David Ferrer (4) vs. Gilles Simon (26) – I am half-tempted to take Simon in what should be a fun match between two guys with a lot of speed.
Richard Gasquet (12) vs. Gael Monfils (20) – MATCH OF THE DAY ALERT – Two erratic and talented players collide. Who knows what will happen, but it should be fun for the spectators. I think Gael might be able to upset Gasquet is it would even be an upset.
Marin Cilic (14) vs. Kevin Anderson (18) – I doubted Anderson after his post-Toronto swoon, but he seems to have his sea legs again.
