Basel 2014: Semifinal Predictions

Roger Federer vs. Ivo Karlovic

Roger is on his home turf and facing the Big Man with a lot of momentum on his side.  Ivo could be virtually unbreakable indoors.  Roger has won 9 consecutive tiebreaks.  Roger is better across the board, but Ivo has a puncher’s chance with his massive serve.  Both players should know what to expect as they have already faced one another 12 times with Roger leading the series 11-1.

My Prediction: Roger Federer d. Ivo Karlovic 7-6, 6-3

David Goffin vs. Boma Coric

A 17-year-old ranked in the top 150 versus a player on an unconventional roll. Both players have momentum and cause for excitement.  Coric just achieved his biggest career win.  At his young age, he seems likely to have a letdown. Goffin plays a style akin to that of Davydenko.  If Goffin robs enough time from Coric who just beat an all-time great in straight sets, Goffin will likely keep his younger opponent from getting traction.  If Coric gets traction, watch out.

My Prediction: David Goffin d. Boma Coric 6-3, 6-4
