[3] Maria Sharapova (RUS) vs [10] Carla Suárez Navarro (ESP)
I think CSN has a chance. As I keep mentioning, her one-handed backhand comes at a different angle when she hits topspin. She also can slice more easily and effectively than most. WTA players do not see a lot of one-handed backhands so this helps CSN. Also, CSN is a fighter on court. She will not roll over for Sharapova. Still, Maria Sharapova has found clay to be her best surface in recent years. I think Sharapova handles the high bounce on clay well. The slower surface also allows her a little more time when footwork has never been her best attribute. If CSN can make Sharapova bend, change direction, and play defensive tennis, CSN will win. I just think Sharapova’s first-strike capabilities with her serve and return will prevent that from happening enough for CSN to win.
My Prediction: Maria Sharapova d. Carla Suarez Navarro 7-5, 6-4
