The BBC announced today that Clare Balding would be fronting their evening highlights show, Wimbledon2day. Balding will be a direct replacement for John Inverdale who somewhat bizarrely, given his penchant for inflammatory off the cuff remarks will move into the commentary box.

Balding, still riding the crest of the wave which catapulted her into British media superstardom since the 2012 Olympics, will now have fronted three similar highlight shows for the BBC in the past 18 months.

Inverdale meanwhile is perhaps, beginning to pay for some of those more controversial comments along with what appears to be an increasingly cosy relationship with ITV. With him fronting their Roland Garros coverage for the past four years as well as their prospective rugby world cup coverage later in the year.

Why might this be an issue?

For one, Clare Balding’s TV shows seem to have a fairly juvenile theme running throughout them…
