One win each away from doing this all over again
Predicted Winners in BOLD
[1] Serena Williams (USA) vs Heather Watson (GBR) – I just saw someone tweet that Watson would win this match. I do not think this is likely or even really possible if Serena is playing her normal level of tennis. I expect Williams to win in two sets with one of them being somewhat close.
[4] Maria Sharapova (RUS) vs [29] Irina-Camelia Begu (ROU) – Maria’s footing and footwork are always a question mark, but the hot conditions have probably made the court play a bit firmer than usual, and this is to Maria’s advantage.
[6] Lucie Safarova (CZE) vs Sloane Stephens (USA) – The winner of this match has a great path to the semifinal round. I think it could go either way, but Safarova’s recent play in doubles should help her when she is at net. Also, Safarova has momentum from Roland Garros.
[16] Venus Williams (USA) vs Aleksandra Krunic (SRB) – Unless Wednesday was too draining, I expect Venus to play through to meet Serena.
[22] Samantha Stosur (AUS) vs Coco Vandeweghe (USA) – Stosur has the tools to do well here, but I keep expecting a letdown.
[23] Victoria Azarenka (BLR) vs Kristina Mladenovic (FRA) – This could be interesting, but I think Vika is putting together a solid comeback year after last year’s injury marred campaign.
[14] Andrea Petkovic (GER) vs Zarina Diyas (KAZ) – Petko-power
[30] Belinda Bencic (SUI) vs [Q] Bethanie Mattek-Sands (USA) – Mattek-Sands seems to be in a good spot as a competitor on court and has little to lose. Therefore, I will take her in an upset.
