Wimbledon 2015: Getting Back to or Reaching the Top – Radwanska vs. Muguruza Semifinal Prediction

Agniezska Radwanska vs. Garbine Muguruza

Agniezska Radwanska lost a tense Wimbledon final to Serena Williams in 2012 1-6, 7-5, 2-6.  In 2013, Radwanska looked to have a path to the title as Serena was beaten by Sabine Lisicki removing her roadblock from 2012. Instead, Lisicki beat Radwanska 9-7 in the 3rd set to prevent Radwanska’s return to the Wimbledon final.  Since 2013, Aga has lost a lot of momentum and ranking points on tour.  Her 2012 and 2013 Wimbledon showings seemed to be as close as Aga would ever get to a Grand Slam title.  Yet, here she is in the semifinal round once again.

Garbine Muzuruga defeated Serena Williams at the 2014 French Open and played the eventual champion Maria Sharapova quite closely at that same event.  Muguruza then pushed Serena hard at this year’s Australian Open. Muguruza has power in her strokes and is a good athlete.  She is a young gun who seems like a prospect worth a lot of attention.

Who Will Win?

Garbine has a ton of weapons and a lot of upside as a player.  Aga has new life when her career seemed to have gone off of the rails.  Aga is a crafty player with a lot of variety.  She won the first 2 of her 4 career matches with Muguruza.  Garbine has won the two most recent matches, both in 2015, in their head-to-head.  If Muguruza goes out and plays this like she is playing just another match, I think the Spaniard will win.  If the situation of reaching a Wimbledon final weighs on Muguruza, I think Radwanska will win.

My Prediction: Garbine Muguruza d. Agnieszka Radwanska 7-5, 6-4
