Wimbledon 2015: The Storm before the Storm – Murray vs. Federer Semifinal Prediction

[2] Roger Federer (SUI) v [3]  Andy Murray (GBR)

When the 2015 Wimbledon draw was announced, a lot of people predicted this clash.  Roger and Andy each captured key tune-up events.  Roger holds 7 Wimbledon titles, and has one of the most decorated grass court careers in the history of tennis.  Andy Murray has won a Wimbledon title and a gold medal at the hallowed grounds of the All England Club.  Murray made history with his 2013 title.  Each man has handed tough losses to the other on Centre Court.  How will this play out?

Federer’s Return and Murray’s Second Serve

Roger and Andy are outstanding champions playing great tennis heading into this match.  Roger’s serve has been quite solid giving up only one service break in 5 matches.  Andy Murray has a tremendous return of serve.  Of course, Roger will aim to take care of his service games versus Andy’s return game.  Andy will likewise seek to pressure Roger’s serve.  I think the match will come down to areas that might be considered weaker in each man’s game.  Andy Murray’s second serve can be a liability.  Roger Federer has been known to convert a low percentage of break points.  I think the player who shores up a weaker aspect of his excellent game will have an advantage.

My Prediction – I Have no Idea

I am generally at a loss as to how this match will conclude.  Roger beat Andy 3 times last year, but Murray seems to be playing at a much higher level than he did in 2014.  I can imagine either of them winning in a fairly routine fashion, and I can see this going deep into a 5th set.  My head says Murray is young enough to outplay Roger at 33.  My gut says Roger seems to have a great chance at taking this title.  In this case, I will go with my gut as I see Roger producing a vintage result.  Also, he will be the player who attacks more often so I think that is always a slight edge if all else is equal.

My Prediction: Roger Federer d. Andy Murray 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4

PS – I wish I had more to say, but I am confused.  I did like something I saw on twitter.  We’ve all seen Fedal and  Rafole to describe the Federer-Nadal and Nadal-Djokovic rivalries.  I saw #Murderer for Murray-Federer.

i know… i completely vacillate on this match too. i feel like andy’s had a slightly more difficult draw, and he’s faced a big server and come through (karlovic) but fed hasn’t really faced anyone who could even remotely return like andy, so that makes me lean towards andy. but then there’s fed’s serving, will and record that make me second guess that. true 50-50 i guess.
