Murray 2Andy Murray survived from match point down on Thursday in Cincinnati and is through to Friday’s quarterfinals against Richard Gasquet. The winner will likely go up against Roger Federer in the semis.

Murray and Gasquet will be meeting for the ninth time in their careers when they battle in the quarterfinals of the Western & Southern Open on Friday.

The head-to-head series stands at 5-3 in favor of Murray, who has won five of their last six encounters. They have not faced each other since the 2013 Miami Masters, where the Scot prevailed 6-7(3), 6-1, 6-2. Gasquet last beat Murray on the clay courts of Rome, also in a three-setter.

Somewhat surprisingly, it was Murray who endured a tougher test throughout Cincinnati’s early rounds. Fresh off a title in Montreal, the world No. 2 followed up an opening bye with a 6-4, 7-6(1)…
