Mahut on a Roll
Carlos Berlocq and Fabio Fognini deserve a lot of credit for picking up titles last week. Nicolas Mahut receives a big shout out for winning the final event of the 2013 grass court season in Newport, Rhode Island. Mahut is a bit of a grass court specialist as he was runner-up at Queen’s Club and Newport in 2007. He has joined Andy Murray as the only men with 2 grass court titles in 2013 by adding Newport to his first career title claimed in the Netherlands in June. Mahut also added the Newport doubles title equaling Rajeev Ram’s 2009 singles and doubles sweep. Mahut is an easy player to root for given his hustle and high level of sportsmanship.
Federer Tests a New Stick
Roger Federer has changed to a 98 square inch racquet from his traditional 90 square inch frame. I think this could work well for 3 reasons:
1. Added power might mean more aces and service winners. Shorter points are good for a player in his thirties.
2. A larger sweet spot and more square inches might help Federer hit better shots when sightly out of position at the baseline and the net.
3. The Placebo Effect – If Roger thinks this will help him, it might indeed help him.
It is now time to watch and wait.
How far removed is this new frame from the original?
