Predicted Winners in BOLD
First Round
David Goffin vs. Alexandr Dolgopolov – I am taking Goffin in an extremely interesting match. This match should have a lot of fun rallies.
Benoit Paire (24) vs. Alex Bogomolov Jr. – Paire is playing quite well in 2013.
Tim Smyczek vs. James Duckworth
Kevin Anderson (17) vs. Daniel Brands – This will come down to who can impose his style of play. 50-50 match
Lukas Lacko vs. Somdev Devvarman
Igor Sijsling vs. Peter Gojowczyk
Juan Martin del Potro (6) vs. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez – JMDP should win, but Lopez is a tough out as he makes a player beat him.
Fabio Fognini (16) vs. Rajeev Ram – Fognini is the favorite but his performance in Cincinnati was shameful so I will not be picking him.
Andy Murray (3) vs. Michael Llodra – Murray should start his title defense in a fun but one-sided match.
Andreas Seppi (20) vs. Xavier Malisse – X Man wins in a mild upset.
Stanislas Wawrinka (9) vs. Radek Stepanek – This is not the draw Stan was looking for after getting Hewitt in round 1 at Wimbledon.
Victor Hanescu vs. Leonardo Mayer
Marcos Baghdatis vs. Go Soeda – I love Baghdatis, but I don’t see him advancing very far in NY.
Jurgen Melzer (29) vs. Evgeny Donskoy – Melzer is always a tough out.
Mikhail Youzhny (21) vs. Nicolas Mahut – I’d love to pick Mahut, but I think Youzhny should win so long as he is motivated.
Jurgen Zopp vs. Marcel Granollers – The Spaniard advances.
James Blake vs. Ivo Karlovic – This comes down to Ivo’s serve and Blake’s ability to focus under these circumstances. I think the crowd plays a factor here, and Blake wins. Do not expect a lot of defensive tennis.
Lleyton Hewitt vs. Brian Baker – Hewitt is a slight favorite in a match that could be great.
