I’m surprised to see so many people picking Gasquet. I think it’s just wishful thinking because a Gasquet-Nadal semi will be slightly more appealing than another Nadal-Ferrer thrashing.

I figure that Ferrer had played poorly since Wimbledon but seems to have rebounded. I also wanted to pick one upset today. I agree Ferrer is the favorite, but I picked Gasquet because picking Robredo was not happening.

I’d be really happy for Gasquet, but the H2H would suggest Ferrer.

Well, Robredo clearly won’t win, but his uncanny ability to quickly change the angle of the rally could, in theory at least, make him a tougher out for Rafa than one might first suspect. Plus, hard has always been his most natural surface (a rarity among Spaniards), so…umm…yeah, let’s just go with Dan’s comment and leave it at that.

I think Robredo deserves so much credit in his career for being ft, for being disciplined on court etc. I just do not see a path to victory in this match. I don’t think Roger had a path to victory either. Maybe he would have won a set as he did in Cincy, and maybe Robredo wins a set. 3 is just not in the cards.

So much for that… Good call on the Gasquet win! I really didn’t see that coming.

robredo played poorly and rafa played well. robredo did not serve nearly as well as he did in the fed match. he played much more defensively too.
