Australian Open 2014: Day 7 Men’s Predictions

Predicted Winners in BOLD

Fabio Fognini (ITA) [15] vs. Novak Djokovic (SRB) [2] – Fabio might want to check his flight itinerary.  He is a good player and even more dangerous on clay, but Nole should advance.

Djokovic should advance

Stanislas Wawrinka (SUI) [8] vs. Tommy Robredo (ESP) [17] – Robredo could reach back-to-back Grand Slam quarterfinal rounds.  I think Stan is the favorite, but both of these guys are likable and easy to cheer for when playing.

Florian Mayer (GER) vs. David Ferrer (ESP) [3] – I think this goes at least 4, but Ferrer is likely to advance.

Ferrer's run likely ends

Tomas Berdych (CZE) [7] vs. Kevin Anderson (RSA) [19] – Mr. Anderson vs. The Big Czech.  On paper, Berdych has to be favored, and he generally handles big servers well.  Still, Anderson dropped his first two sets of the tournament and has been rock solid since.  I will take momentum over credentials.  This is probably a bad pick.

Anderson over Berdych is probably the boldest pick in tennis nowadays.

Yeah, I just couldn’t go all higher seeds. Still, it is more wish than likely.

I wouldn’t say this a year ago, but i think Mayer has a good shot at Ferrer. He’s just not playing as well as he used to and Mayer has a big game.

I always worry with Fognini. I remember last year in Indian Wells, I think, where Djokovic won like 6-0 in the first and then Fog somehow almost snuck out with a win. You never know what you’ll get with him.

I don’t like Robredo but Wawrinka is a bigger threat to Djokovic. I don’t think the improved Wawrinka loses this match but I hope he’s worn down somewhat.

I think what you are saying is spot-on
