Predicted Winners in BOLD
Fourth Round
Ernests Gulbis (20) vs. Roberto Bautista-Agut – Gulbis deserves a lot of credit for his strong start to 2014. He is shredding my image of him as talented but inconsistent. Bautista-Agut is also having a great 2014. This may be a year in which multiple players step forward on tour. This is a hard match to call. On clay, I’d take the Spaniard as a favorite. Here Gulbis’ power might give him an edge, but I still like the grinder to win in a close match.
Feliciano Lopez vs. Julien Benneteau – I am staying on the Frenchman.
Novak Djokovic (2) vs. Marin Cilic (24) – This would be a statement win for Cilic. It would also be a nice win for Novak as a few questions have arisen after his two events of 2014. Cilic is in great form, but I think on paper Nole has to be the pick.
Stanislas Wawrinka (3) vs. Kevin Anderson (17) – Anderson has had a strong 2014. Wawrinka is undefeated in 2014! He will remain undefeated for at least one more match is my prediction.
Andy Murray (5) vs. Milos Raonic (10) – Milos got a win over Berdych last fall and did reach a Masters 1000 final last year. Murray has not looked 100% in 2014 while recovering from minor back surgery (is any back surgery minor?). Milos has a great opportunity to pull an upset. I still think Murray will find a way to advance.
Roger Federer (7) vs. Tommy Haas (11) – This could be a match on Jim Courier’s Powershares Tour based on age. I’ll take Federer to continue his mini-comeback.
John Isner (12) vs. Fernando Verdasco (30) – Hot Sauce is playing well enough to win this match in my opinion.
Fabio Fognini (13) vs. Alexandr Dolgopolov – Dolgopolov will need to avoid a letdown after his big win, but he played well in Rio and has a chance to help his ranking with at least one more win at Indian Wells.
