At What Point does a Fan Transition from Clay to Grass?

Just a Bit of Musing

Queen’s Club has a lot of history.  Many winners have gone on to do serious damage at Wimbledon (see Murray, Andy in 2013 for the most recent example).  Halle has gotten a major boost from Roger Federer winning the event in 2003-2006, 2008 (all part of Federer’s 65 match grass court winning streak) and 2013 as well as being runner-up at Halle in 2010 and 2012.  Federer has followed Halle titles up with a Wimbledon title 4 times and 6 times has appeared in the championship round at both Wimbledon and Halle.  Having said all of that, this tennis fan needs a few days to move on from Roland Garros.

Next year, tennis will allow for 3 weeks between the end of Roland Garros and the start of Wimbledon.  The extra week should benefit players making a transition from clay to grass, but it will also allow fans and/or writers to shift gears mentally as well.  Newport, RI may take on an important role as a grass court training ground for players born in the US, Canada and South America who lose early in Paris.  I will somewhat mourn the passing of the two week shift even if it is the sensible (and overdo) thing to do.  This will likely be the last year to go from the French Open ending on Sunday to seeing a grass court draw with Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Milos Raonic and Kei Nishikori staring on Monday.
