Wimbledon 2014: Day 8 Ladies’ Singles Predictions

Predicted Winners in BOLD

Every player in the draw has to feel that her chances of winning the title improved after Serena lost

The 2nd Monday at Wimbledon is a Great Event.  It is a lot like the first four days of the NCAA basketball tournament.  Many matches are going on simultaneously and a fan can take his or her pick of who to watch.

[13] Eugenie Bouchard (CAN) vs [25] Alizé Cornet (FRA) – Cornet faces a double challenge: how to not have a letdown after and upset and how to beat an excellent player.  I think Bouchard keeps her excellent 2014 rolling forward in 2 routine(ish) sets.

Court 1

[11] Ana Ivanovic (SRB) vs [19] Sabine Lisicki (GER) 46 11 – to finish – I will stick with my earlier pick of Lisicki.

[5]  Maria Sharapova (RUS) vs [9] Angelique Kerber (GER) – I love Kerber’s lefty game. However, Sharapova is now the favorite to win her 2nd Wimbledon title.  I don’t see Sharapova losing this match.

Court 2 (11:30 a.m. start)

[6] Petra Kvitova (CZE) vs Shuai Peng (CHN) – Petra won the best match of the Ladies’ event to this point.  That has to give her confidence.

Court 3

[4] Agnieszka Radwanska (POL) vs [22] Ekaterina Makarova (RUS) – The 2012 runner-up has to have images of trophies in her head with Serena no longer in the draw.

Court 12

Yaroslava Shvedova (KAZ) vs Madison Keys (USA) 76 (7) 66 – to finish – I am pretty sure I picked Keys earlier so I have to stick with my earlier pick.

[16] Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) vs Barbora Zahlavova Strycova (CZE) – The Wizard of Woz has a chance to win this event.

Court 18

[23] Lucie Safarova (CZE) vs [Q] Tereza Smitkova (CZE) – The qualifier is on a dream run, but at some point the clock strikes midnight.
