Tennis Power Ranking 2014: Tsonga Turns Toronto into French Canada

Tennis Abides Power Ranking 2014

Ranking #9: Toronto

    1. Novak Djokovic – Nole stays at #1, but his win vs. Monfils and loss to Tsonga were not the textbook way to take advantage of Rafa not playing Masters Canada.
    2. Rafael Nadal – Is he healthy?  Will he be healthy in time of the US Open?
    3. Roger Federer – Federer is now 33 and has played in 7 tournament finals in 2014 after a poor by his standards 2013.  The bad news is that Roger is 2-5 in tournament finals including 0-3 in Masters 1000 championship matches.
    4. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga – Tsonga looked like a top 10 player on the cusp of declining to a top 30 player for most of 2014.  The spark was not there.  He leaves Toronto beating Nole in straight sets, rallying from 0-3 in the 3rd set to beat Andy Murray and then posted straight set wins over Grigor Dimitrov and Roger Federer.  Those are 4 huge wins.  He possibly beat the 4 best players in the field on his way to the title.  Change since last ranking – not ranked (!)
    5. Milos Raonic – The big serving Canadian continues to make incremental progress up the ladder in men’s tennis.  Milos followed an impressive win in DC up with a solid quarterfinal showing in Toronto.  Had Tsonga not played so well, Milos would be #4.  Change since last ranking – 1
    6. Grigor Dimitrov – Dimitrov reached the final four of a Masters 1000 event and escaped match points in the quarterfinal round to do it.  His reward was dropping one spot in my power ranking.  Once again Tsonga’s superb play is why Grigor dropped.  Change since last ranking: – 1
    7. Marin Cilic – Marin keeps being an obstacle to top 5 players.  He’s playing well and could be a dark horse for the final four in New York.  Change since last ranking: +1
    8. Stanislas Wawrinka – Stan won a tune-up and the Australian Open.  He then did not have much success.  Then he won Monte Carlo. Then he did not have much success.  Then he reached the Wimbledon quarterfinal round and had Federer on the ropes for 1 1/2 sets.  Then he lost early in Toronto.  Change since last ranking – 1
    9. Andy Murray – Andy says that he is fit again and can train like he wants to again.  He played well vs. Tsonga and should have won given that he led 3-0 in the 3rd set.  Cincinnati could be big for Andy’s confidence as he heads toward the US Open.
    10. Feliciano Lopez – FLo followed up his impressive grass court season with a semifinal showing in Toronto.

Entered the Poll – Jo-Wildfried Tsonga

Dropped out of the Poll – Tomas Berdych

Biggest Mover – Cilic gained one spot while Wawrinka, Raonic and Dimitrov all dropped one spot.
