Predicted Winners in BOLD
Evening Session Matches at the Bottom
9 J. Jankovic vs. B. Jovanovski – JJ should advance.
J. Konta vs. S. Peer – Peer has not done much in 2014, but she should win this match.
K. Knapp vs. T. Pironkova – On grass, I’d take Pirokova, but Knapp is a veteran with nice variety and steady nerves.
T. Smitkova vs. M. Puig – I hope Puig gathers some of her pre-Roland Garros momentum.
S. Peng vs. J. Zheng
19 V. Williams vs. K. Date-Krumm – Two veterans take the court. I think Venus should win, but consider that Date-Krumm had Graf in some trouble at Wimbledon in 1996.
Y. Duan vs. A. Kudryavtseva
6 A. Kerber vs. K. Pervak – I love Kerber’s moxie.
J. Cepelova vs. M. Torro-Flor
4 A. Radwanska vs. S. Fichman – Radwanska could win this event based on what she did in Montreal.
S. Zheng vs. S. Voegele
14 L. Safarova vs. T. Babos
31 K. Nara vs. A. Wozniak – A mild upset
B. Bencic vs. Y. Wickmayer
18 A. Petkovic vs. O. Jabeur – Petkovic should advance.
2 S. Halep – D. Collins – I think Halep will be a tough out so long as she can avoid or overcome Sharapova.
Evening Session Matches
Maria Sharapova (RUS) [5] vs. Maria Kirilenko (RUS) – Kirilenko has done it before. In order to pull the upset, she will need to make Sharapova change directions as often as possible during points and also hope for Sharapova to have a double fault plagued serving day. I think Sharapova advances, but this is not an ideal draw.
Sloane Stephens (USA) [21] vs. Annika Beck (GER) – Stephens tends to be harder to beat at slams.
Magdalena Rybarikova (SVK) vs. Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) [10] – Wozniacki looked like a top 5 player in Montreal and Cincinnati.
Julia Glushko (ISR) vs. Madison Brengle (USA)
Amandine Hesse (FRA) vs. Alize Cornet (FRA) [22] – Cornet is no pushover.
Sara Errani (ITA) [13] vs. Kirsten Flipkens (BEL) – MATCH of the DAY ALERT Flipkins can win if she can bully Errani, but I think Errani’s all-court game and tenacity win an intriguing first round tilt.
Francoise Abanda (CAN) vs. Sabine Lisicki (GER) [26] – The big serving Lisicki should win.
Roberta Vinci (ITA) [28] vs. Paula Ormaechea (ARG) – Vinci’s all-court game should help her advance.
Anastasia Rodionova (AUS) vs. Camila Giorgi (ITA) – A good evening for Italian fans in NYC.
Garbine Muguruza (ESP) [25] vs. Mirjana Lucic-Baroni (CRO) – Garbine’s results have been scattered since beating Serena and playing so well in Paris. I think she wins this match though.
Irina-Camelia Begu (ROU) vs. Silvia Soler-Espinosa (ESP)
Kiki Bertens (NED) vs. Timea Bacsinszky (SUI)
Virginie Razzano (FRA) vs. Johanna Larsson (SWE)
Anna Schmiedlova (SVK) vs. Aliaksandra Sasnovich (BLR)
Kristyna Pliskova (CZE) vs. Alexandra Dulgheru (ROU)
