Australian Open 2015 – Day 2 Men’s Predictions

Predicted Winners in BOLD

[4] Stan Wawrinka (SUI) vs. Marsel Ilhan (TUR) – It will be a new sensation for Stan to enter a slam as the champion, but I think he handles this match well.

[1] Novak Djokovic (SRB) vs. [Q] Aljaz Bedene (SLO) – Novak is built for this surface.  I expect him to do well.

Lleyton Hewitt  (AUS) vs. Ze Zhang (CHN) Rusty won 2 events last year, but the end is near (or is it).

[5] Kei Nishikori (JPN) vs. Nicolas Almagro (ESP) – This is not an easy draw for Kei, but

[17] Gael Monfils (FRA) vs. [Q] Lucas Pouille (FRA) – Gael can lose when least expected, but I think he’s likely to win here.

[8] Milos Raonic (CAN) vs. [Q] Illya Marchenko (UKR) – Milos posted the most consistent results of the under 25 crowd last year.

[16] Fabio Fognini (ITA) vs. Alejandro Gonzalez (COL)  – Fognini’s act has worn thin in many quarters.

[18] Gilles Simon (FRA) vs. Robin Haase (NED) – This could be an excellent match.

[9] David Ferrer (ESP) vs. Thomaz Bellucci (BRA) – The Brazilian could reverse a lot of perceptions with an upset here, but I think Ferrer is too strong mentally and physically to lose here.

[25] Julien Benneteau (FRA) vs. Benjamin Becker (GER) – Another excellent match for those with tickets to watch.

[12] Feliciano Lopez (ESP) vs. [WC] Denis Kudla (USA) – FLo likely has too much firepower over a 3 out of 5 set match to be threatened here.

Vasek Pospisil (CAN) vs Sam Querrey (USA) – A 50-50 match

[31] Fernando Verdasco (ESP) vs. James Ward (GBR) – Hot sauce advances.

Jerzy Janowicz (POL) vs [LL] Hiroki Moriya (JPN) – JMDP would have been my pick here.

[19] John Isner (USA) vs. Jimmy Wang (TPE)

Go Soeda (JPN) vs. [Q] Elias Ymer (SWE)

Adrian Mannarino (FRA) vs. Blaz Rola (SLO)

Sergiy Stakhovsky (UKR) vs. Dusan Lajovic (SRB)

Donald Young (USA) vs. [Q] Tim Puetz (GER) – Young is a respectable top 100 player.  He needs to win a match like this.

[27] Pablo Cuevas (UR) vs. [Q] Matthias Bachinger (GER)

[13] Roberto Bautista Agut (ESP) vs. Dominic Thiem (AUT) – Thiem has a lot of game, and Bautista Agut has a lot of points to defend.

[21] Alexandr Dolgopolov  (UKR) vs. Paolo Lorenzi (ITA) – Dolgopolov is hard to predict.

Andreas Haider Maurer (AUT) vs. [Q] Laurent Lokoli (FRA)

Jarkko Nieminen (FIN) vs. Andrey Golubev (KAZ) – One for the veterans

Marcel Granollers (ESP) vs. [Q] Stéphane Robert (FRA)

Andrey Kuznetsov (RUS) vs. Albert Ramos-Vinolas (ESP)

Guillermo Garcia-Lopez (ESP) vs. Peter Gojowczyk (POL)

Pablo Andujar (ESP) vs. Marius Copil (ROU)

[30] Santiago Giraldo(COL) vs. [Q] Jan Hernych (CZE)

Joao Souza (BRA) vs. Ivan Dodig (CRO)

Steve Johnson vs. Kyle Edmund – The NCAA legend needs this win.

Gilles Muller vs. Pablo Carreno Busta
