Masters Miami 2015: John Isner vs. Novak Djokovic Semifinal Prediction

[1] Novak Djokovic (SRB) vs [22] John Isner (USA)

This match-up has been tricky for Novak at times.  Isner’s second serve is so heavy and his first serve is so big that it can neutralize Novak’s return game (something not easily done).  Novak is the better player in every facet other than serves (and probably overheads).  That does not mean Novak will always win this match.  Isner has victories over Novak at Cincinnati and Indian Wells in the past.  Isner could add Miami to his list.

Novak has a great chance to put the #1 ranking nearly out of reach for 2015.  With his Australian Open and Indian Wells victories and Dubai runner-up finish, Novak has already banked 3300 points earned in 2015.  A win in Miami would leave Novak with 4300 points earned since January 1.  Who exactly would catch him?  Rafa could certainly win Roland Garros and a few Masters 1000 events to add 4000 points to his total, but Novak is likely to pick up many points during the clay court season.  I think if Nole wins Miami, Rafa is the only threat to him finishing 2015 #1 and that would all depend on Rafa dominating the clay court season and then being healthy enough to play the rest of the season.  If Novak is feeling mentally worn down, a title here could allow him some time to return to a good head space.

John Isner has a chance to once again reach a Masters 1000 final.  He could silence many of his critics and critics of US men’s tennis.  Beyond that, John could send a message that he and Gimelstob mean business.  Isner has beaten Dimitrov, Raonic, and Nishikori in succession.  If Isner added Novak to that list, everyone would have to take notice in the locker room.  Isner has a comparative advantage with his serve versus nearly everyone (see his 3-0 record vs. Milos).  If he has figured out a way to maximize that advantage, he could be quite an obstacle.

I think Novak’s superiority of skill will eventually win this match.  Then again, I thought that about Isner’s past 3 opponents.

My Prediction: Novak Djokovic d. John Isner 7-6, 6-4

If Isner springs an upset, it will look something like this
