French Open 2015: May 31st Men’s Predictions

Predicted Winners in BOLD

This is a great slate of matches, but I could see getting 3 or even all 4 of these matches wrong

[4] Tomas Berdych (CZE) vs [14] Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA) – My gut says Tsonga wins this match, but Berdych beat Tsonga in a fairly straight forward manner in Madrid.  Berdych has been quite good against anyone not named Djokovic, Federer, Nadal, or Murray in 2015.  His consistent results create a tipping point of expecting Berdych to win this match in 4 sets.  The French crowd is an x-factor though.

[2] Roger Federer (SUI) vs [13] Gael Monfils (FRA) – Again my gut says Monfils has a tremendous chance to win this match.  La Monf should have beaten Federer at the 2014 US Open.  Monfils crushed Federer in Davis Cup last fall and beat Federer soundly in Monte Carlo.  My head says Monfils playing 10 sets over his past two rounds suggests he might undercut his level versus Federer.  Federer has looked sharp in Paris winning all 9 sets he’s played in 3 rounds..  Federer won Istanbul and reached the Rome final after his Monte Carlo loss vs. Monfils.  I’ll take Federer in 4 or 5 sets.

[5] Kei Nishikori (JPN) vs. Teymuraz Gabashvili (RUS) – Kei has to know that his draw offers him a great chance to reach his second Grand Slam final over the past 52 weeks.  If Kei can take the ball early and rob Gabashvili of time, Kei should advance in 3 or 4 sets.

[8] Stan Wawrinka (SUI) vs [12] Gilles Simon (FRA) – I love Simon’s game.  He has a way of saving break points and gaining traction in a match that seemingly defies logic.  I like Stan to win however because this match is on Stan’s racquet.  If Stan plays well he will win, but Simon’s counter-punching requires Wawrinka to spray some errors for Simon to win.  That gives Stan an edge in my mind.  I’ll take Wawrinka in 4 sets.
