French Open 2015: Is this the Biggest Quarterfinal Ever?

Is this the Biggest Quarterfinal Ever?

Due to a lot of top talents producing outstanding and consistent results, tennis has had a lot of best ever and GOAT descriptions thrown around.  This certainly is a big quarterfinal, but there have been others:

  • 1985 and 1986 Wimbledon champion Boris Becker defeated 1987 Wimbledon champion Pat Cash in the 1988 Wimbledon quarterfinals.
  • Ivan Lendl was #1 in the world and had won the US Open in 1985 & 1986 when he defeated 4-time US Open champion and New York native John McEnroe in the 1987 US Open quarterfinal round.
  • Jim Courier took Andre Agassi down in 4 sets in the quarterfinal round of the 1992 US Open.  Courier had won the Australian Open and French Open in 1992 while Agassi won Wimbledon. These two both came up through the Bollettieri Tennis Academy as juniors and were hostile toward one another at this stage of their careers.
  • Pete Sampras beat Andre Agassi 6-7, 7-6, 7-6, 7-6 in a tiebreak classic under the New York lights at the 2001 US Open.
  • Roger Federer defeated Andre Agassi in a 2 day 5 set quarterfinal affair en route to his first of 5 consecutive US Open titles.

To my mind Novak Djokovic vs. Rafael Nadal seems like a huge quarterfinal because Novak has been so dominant in 2015 and Rafa has produced an unimaginable level of dominance at the French Open for a decade.  Novak has been on the losing end of multiple duels with Rafa in Paris.  This quarterfinal meeting strikes me to be a bit like what we would have felt if Rafa had met Roger in the 2008 Wimbledon quarterfinal round.  Rafa struggled to overthrow Roger’s reign at Wimbledon and a championship match was more fitting for that dynamic. Nole is trying to overthrow Rafa in Paris, and I am guessing if he does so he won’t worry that it happened in the round of 8.  My guess is Rafa will also not worry about the round of this meeting if he advances to another Roland Garros semifinal.

Ask me on Sunday*

Still, if the winner of this match turns around and loses in the semifinal to Andy Murray, I don’t think the weight of the match will be remembered to the degree it is being promoted right now.  The winner must take this quarterfinal win to the winner’s circle on Sunday or it will be a bit like Sampras beating Pat Rafter, Andre Agassi, and Marat Safin in succession only to be crushed in the 2001 US Open final by Lleyton Hewitt.  Pete had a great run in 2001, but he had to wait until 2002 to hold the winner’s trophy again in New York.

* – I know I asked the question in the first place so this is a silly request at some level.

No, silly is the fact that I could have had a ticket to the QF round (not sure, but I think it was tomorrow’s Ph. Chartrier session) for FREE but neglected to react in time!
