Wimbledon 2015: Ladies’ Quarterfinal Predictions

Predicted Winners in BOLD

Maria Sharapova (RUS) [4] Coco Vandeweghe(USA) – Coco can win this match if she presses Maria’s serve. We know Sharapova’s serve can at times go off the rails.  If Vandeweghe serves with poise and confidence, she can put a lot of pressure on Sharapova.  I still think that the veteran has to be favored here.  Sharapova can play her own brand of power tennis and put Vandeweghe on the defensive.  That is what I think she will do to win the match and set up the semifinal every TV executive is hoping to see.

Serena Williams (USA) [1] Victoria Azarenka (BLR) [23] – Vika played Serena tough on clay twice.  Can she replicate that on grass?  Sure.  Vika is a strong, fast, and explosive athlete.  Grass tends to reward athetic players. Vika’s issue is not her athleticism versus Serena as much as it is a lack of tennis weapons compared to the world #1.  Vika’s serve is not the weapon Serena’s is.  Secondly, Serena has more reliable put away shots on her groundstrokes than Vika does.  Serena’s superior shot-making will be the difference.

Garbine Muguruza (ESP) [20] Timea Bacsinszky (SUI) [15] – Garbine has defied my picking against her many times.  She is a talented and powerful young player with a great opportunity.  Whatever her grass court problems were in the lead-up to Wimbledon are far behind her now.  Bacsinszky is a gritty competitor who will make Muguruza beat her, but I think Garbine will do just that.

Madison Keys (USA) [21] Agnieszka Radwanska (POL) [13] – Radwanska came close to winning Wimbledon in 2012.  Since then, she has struggled to reach those heights.   The failed Navratilova coaching experiment is gone, but Aga has a chance to get back to the Wimbledon final where she may feel she has unfinished business.  She has to see this opportunity.  Keys has more weapons, but Aga can draw upon guile, experience, and the visceral sense that she has been given a second chance to advance.
