1. Good news for Serena Williams and her quest to become the first Grand Slam winner since 1988: She’s the top seed for only the fourth time in her career (crazy, right?) and in each of the three previous times, she’s won the title (2002, 2013 and 2014).

2. The draw was looking good early for Serena (they pick from top seed to bottom) — Petra Kvitova on the other side, Maria Sharapova in her half and the lowest No. 5-8 seed in her quarter (Karolina Pliskova). But then Sloane Stephens, who beat Serena at the Australian Open last year and came within a few points of doing it again at the French Open this year, got drawn to potentially play Serena in round three.
