US Open 2015: September 1st Men’s Predictions

Predicted Winners in BOLD

[2] Roger Federer (SUI) vs Leonardo Mayer (ARG) – This match could be tricky for Federer, but a 3 of 5 set match favors the superior player.

[3] Andy Murray (GBR) vs Nick Kyrgios (AUS) – I think the hype will out weigh the quality of this match as Nick doesn’t just yet match up well with Murray.  Murray gets too many serves back into play to let Nick command the match.

[13] John Isner (USA) vs Malek Jaziri (TUN) – I like Isner to win in what is a pretty favorable match.

[5] Stan Wawrinka (SUI) vs. Albert Ramos-Vinolas (ESP) – This could be a little tricky for Stan if he is not playing clean tennis.

[6] Tomas Berdych (CZE) vs [WC] Bjorn Fratangelo (USA) – The Big Czech has been struggling since Roland Garros.  Can he find his form in time for a second week run in NY?

[28] Jack Sock (USA) vs Victor Estrella Burgos (DOM) – How many times will we hear about Sock’s forehand RPMs?

Austin Krajicek (USA) vs. Santiago Giraldo (COL)

Rajeev Ram (USA) vs. Ryan Harrison (USA) – This is a 50-50 match in my mind.  I think Harrison has a more well-rounded game, but Ram has the better serve and some confidence from Newport.

[12] Richard Gasquet (FRA) vs Thanasi Kokkinakis (AUS) – Gasquet has quietly become consistent after a terribly inconsistent career.

[24] Bernard Tomic (AUS) vs. Damir Dzumhur (BIH) – Tomic has a winnable match.

[29] Philipp Kohlschreiber (GER) vs [Q] Alexander Zverev (GER) – I could see this going either way as this is a tough draw for a seeded player in round 1.

Marcos Baghdatis (CYP) vs. Steve Darcis (BEL) – Straight out of 2006?

Denis Kudla (USA) vs. [Q] Jurgen Melzer (AUT) – Wow … hard to pick.  Melzer is a cagey player who is match tough and Kudla is rising.  If I had a ticket, I would be watching this match up close.

[30] Thomaz Bellucci (BRA) vs. James Ward (GBR) – Bellucci is seeded?

John-Patrick Smith (AUS) vs. Mikhail Youzhny (RUS) – Ochen harasho (sorry no cyrilic font)

Konstantin Kravchuk (RUS) vs. Adrian Mannarino (FRA)

[21] Ivo Karlovic (CRO) vs Federico Delbonis (ARG) – The ace machine tends to take a toll over a 3 of 5 set match.

[WC] Jared Donaldson (USA) vs. Lukas Rosol (CZE) – Does Jared hate Lukas?

Aleksandr Nedovyesov (KAZ) vs. Lleyton Hewitt (AUS) – Rusty has performed as well in NY as anywhere else in his career.  Can he win a few matches?  I think he wins at least 1 match.

[22] Viktor Troicki (SRB) vs. [WC] Frances Tiafoe (USA)

Jiri Vesely (CZE) vs. Paolo Lorenzi (ITA) – This should be a fun match.

Gilles Muller (LUX) vs. Ruben Bemelmans (BEL) – Veteran power?

Paul-Henri Mathieu (FRA) vs. [Q] Yoshihito Nishioka (JPN) – Mathieu’s career is on an uptick this summer.

[15] Kevin Anderson (RSA) vs [Q] Andrey Rublev (RUS) – If he can win in North Carolina, he can win anywhere (?).

Ernests Gulbis (LAT) vs. Aljaz Bedene (GBR) – Gulbis has to be the hardest player to predict in this draw.

[31] Guillermo Garcia-Lopez (ESP) vs Janko Tipsarevic (SRB) – Another fun match

[20] Dominic Thiem (AUT) vs Daniel Gimeno-Traver (ESP) – Has Thiem gotten his legs back after playing nearly 3 consecutive weeks on clay this summer?  If so, I think he can make some noise in the US Open.

Hyeon Chung (KOR) vs. James Duckworth (AUS) – A great opportunity for both players

Robin Haase (NED) vs. Dustin Brown (GER) – This is a 50-50 match that could be quite fun.

Benjamin Becker (GER) vs. Denis Istomin (UZB) – Another 50-50 match

[11] Gilles Simon (FRA) vs Donald Young (USA) – Simon’s 1st round loss in North Carolina makes me less than confident in this pick.

Sam Querrey (USA) vs. Nicolas Mahut (FRA) – Mahut will make Sam beat him.  I think Mahut’s willpower is something that will help him to win in 4 or 5 tight sets.
