US Open 2015: September 5th Men’s Predictions

Predicted Winners in BOLD

“We’re not playing at Halle?  Doesn’t seem right.”

Philipp Kohlschreiber (GER) [29] vs. Roger Federer (SUI) [2] – These two should put on a fun match, but Roger likely has too much heft for Kohlschreiber to win 3 sets.

Thomaz Bellucci (BRA) [30] vs. Andy Murray (GBR) [3] – Bellucci has played quite well in this event, but Murray knows he needs to take care of business and save his legs after a long second round match.

John Isner (USA) [13] vs. Jiri Vesely (CZE) – Isner has a very workable draw through 3 rounds.  I think he makes it work and thanks the draw gods that Kohlschreiber is not his 3rd round opponent.

Stan Wawrinka (SUI) [5] vs. Ruben Bemelmans (BEL) – Stan has Slogged through 6 sets to this point.  I expect him to win again in straight sets.

Bernard Tomic (AUS) [24] vs. Richard Gasquet (FRA) [12] – This could go either way, but Gasquet has been quite solid as of late and Tomic may be fatigued.

Viktor Troicki (SRB) [22] vs. Donald Young (USA) – Young is a decent pick for an upset win here.

Tomas Berdych (CZE) [6] vs. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez (ESP) [31] – GGL has a chance, but Berdych has to be the pick.

Kevin Anderson (RSA) [15] vs. Dominic Thiem (AUT) [20] – This is a tough one. Anderson has immediate momentum from North Carolina, but Thiem had a breakout summer.  Anderson’s serve is the biggest weapon in this match, but Thiem’s variety is a real factor.  To me this is a 50-50 match, but I think Thiem being a bit younger may play a bit loser and find a way to win in 4 or 5 sets.
