World Tour Finals 2015: Novak Djokovic vs. Roger Federer

Novak Djokovic vs. Roger Federer

This pairing decided the two most recent Grand Slam events as well as three Masters 1000 events and one 500 series event in 2015.  Novak Djokovic won 4 of their 6 clshes in 2015.  This seems like a good place to start because on an indoor court at this stage of their careers Nole seems to have about a 67% chance at victory.  Fans should enjoy this with Federer aging like fine wine and Novak playing as well as he ever has.  Federer’s game can certainly bother Novak on faster surfaces and indoor courts would seemingly fit the bill.  Still, if Novak is playing under perfect conditions, he has to like his chances as he is the best player in the world.

How will this play out?  Roger has handled aging quite well.  I do think he understands he that he may play Novak twice if he is going to win this tournament.  This match will not eliminate either player, and the ultimate focus for both guys is to win the event.  Federer seemed quite stung by his US Open loss to Novak as the tournament lined up quite nicely for Roger. Will Roger come out and try to do what he did in Cincinnati and attack Novak’s serve as often as possible?  Will Novak’s airtight play simply not give Roger enough traction to challenge the world #1? I cannot tell you how tomorrow plays out, but my guess is that Novak’s current form is pretty untouchable.  Unless Novak has a dip in his play, I think he will be the top player from his round robin group.  I also expect Roger to be in the semifinal as the #2 player from this round robin.  A second match may very well take place on Sunday in London.

My Prediction: Novak Djokovic d. Roger Federer 7-6, 6-3
