I don’t think it will be quite this close
Angelique Kerber (GER) vs Victoria Azarenka (BLR)
This should be a great match. Kerber posted many good results in 2015 outside of the majors. I compared her 2015 to Magnus Norman’s 1999 campaign. Norman turned his solid 1999 showings into an Australian Open semifinal, a Roland Garros runner-up finish, and a title at Masters Roma. I think Kerber will be more durable in major events in 2016 due to what she proved to herself and the locker room last year.
Azarenka is a 2-time Australian Open champion who loves this surface and who is finally healthy. Vika has been taking no prisoners in 2016. Her athleticism is making the difference in matches as her technique is showing no signs of rust from her injury layoff. Vika will be favored in this match based on history and recent form. She beat Kerber in the final of Brisbane spring boarding both players into Melbourne. The winner of this match has a great opportunity to reach the final and that only adds to what is at stake.
My Prediction: I think Vika’s return of serve will bother Kerber and be the difference. Victoria Azarenka d. Angelique Kerber 6-4, 6-2
