Nick Kyrgios vs. John Isner
This match is interesting on several levels. Isner skipped the olympic games to in part seek his 4th Atlanta title. Nick Kyrgios’ troubles with Tennis Australia left him out of the 2016 olympic games. Each man has a massive service game. Isner’s consistency has never been questioned, but his game is limited. Kyrgios’ has a lot of mobility and athleticism, but his effort level has been questioned especially in 2016. Both players have some weaknesses on the backhand wing. Both players like to dictate play, and I expect both players to hold most of the time.
Kyrgios’ ceiling is higher than Isner’s, but his floor is lower than Isner’s too. Isner tends to play well in the US and especially in Georgia and North Carolina. That makes Isner a tougher opponent than usual heading into this championship match. I actually think that is good for Kyrgios. Nick Kyrgios can sometimes become bored on the tennis court. He should be fully engaged facing Isner at his strongest.
My Prediction: I am going with my gut here and thinking that Kyrgios will bring great effort into this final match. Nick Kyrgios d. John Isner 7-6, 6-4
Confidence in my pick: Low – Both players’ ability to hold serve makes this a bit of a toss up in terms of who wins.
