(Q) Daria Gavrilova VS (3) Simona Halep – In a few years, this meeting might be in a final rather than a round of 16.  I think Halep wins, but Gavrilova is a good fighter on court and could win.  Halep needs to play clean tennis to keep this match simple for her.

(5) Agnieszka Radwanska VS (10) Johanna Konta – Aga was at Cincy early and that always bodes well in my mind, but I think the match is more on Konta’s racquet than Aga’s.

(LL) Misaki Doi VS (15) Karolina Pliskova – Doi has a great chance to turn qualifying disappointment into a ranking points windfall,  but Pliskova is favored for a reason.

Barbora Strycova VS (2) Angelique Kerber – Kerber has some pressure in terms of chasing the #1 ranking, but I think she wins this match.

(Q)Timea Babos VS (8) Dominika Cibulkova – Cibulkova should win, but this is a really nice result for Babos.

(4) Garbiñe Muguruza VS (16) Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova – I think Muguruza is back to playing her regular brand of tennis and the French Open hangover is more or less over.

(6) Roberta Vinci VS (9) Carla Suárez Navarro – CSN should be able to handle Vinci’s slices better than some due to her excellent one-handed backhand and the different footwork involved in that stroke.

(12) Timea Bacsinszky VS (7) Svetlana Kuznetsova – 50-50 match in my mind
