Predicted Winners in BOLD
Andy Murray (GBR) vs Marcel Granollers (ESP) – Granollers is a tough competitor who could trouble murray under certain circumstances. Murray seems to be in some of the best form of his career, and the Scot has tended to play quite well in New York. That all spells trouble for Granollers.
Steve Johnson (USA) vs [WC] Juan Martin del Potro (ARG) – Both men left the Rio games with a lot of momentum. Johnson played well enough in Cincinnati to pass John Isner (who did not win Atlanta) as the #1 ranked US player. Johnson’s last match leaves me considering his physical stamina entering this match when I would normally be considering JMDP’s lack of match toughness as a factor.
Kei Nishikori (JPN) vs. [Q] Karen Khachanov (RUS) – Nishikori’s return of serve and baseline hugging game will deprive his opponent of time.
Stan Wawrinka (SUI) vs [Q] Alessandro Giannessi (ITA) – Stan looked sharp in his first round match with Verdasco. I think he will welcome facing a qualifier in his second round match.
Dominic Thiem (AUT) vs. Ricardas Berankis (LTU) – Thiem has a good chance to play his way into a comfort level at the US Open with a workable second round match.
Nick Kyrgios (AUS) vs. Horacio Zeballos (ARG) – This could go either way as Kyrgios can throw in a clunky performance. Still, Kyrgios serve and easy power should be enough to win on this surface.
Pablo Carreno Busta (ESP) vs. [PR] Janko Tipsarevic (SRB) – This should be a fun match, and those with tickets should get a good seat. I think Busta’s ground game will eventually lead him to victory.
Feliciano Lopez (ESP) vs. Joao Sousa (POR) – This match could go either way. I think Sousa’s return might do enough to keep Lopez on the defensive more than he would like to be.
Alexander Zverev (GER) vs. Daniel Evans (GBR) – I went back and forth on this match, but I think Zverev’s time is coming.
Illya Marchenko (UKR) vs. Damir Dzumhur (BIH)
Gilles Simon (FRA) vs. Paolo Lorenzi (ITA)
Viktor Troicki (SRB) vs. Jared Donaldson (USA)
Ivo Karlovic (CRO) vs. Donald Young (USA) – Young could win this match, but I think Ivo posses enough of an unorthodox threat to take the match.
David Ferrer (ESP) vs Fabio Fognini (ITA) – I think Fognini’s shot-making ability will make the difference given David Ferrer’s recent struggles.
Paul-Henri Mathieu (FRA) vs. Nicolas Mahut (FRA) – Two veterans battle it out, and the match will come down to how well Mahut can attack. If P-H M forces a match full of rallies, Mahut will be in trouble.
Grigor Dimitrov (BUL) vs Jérémy Chardy (FRA) – I think Dimitrov’s recent uptick in form makes him the slight favorite in a fun match-up.
