US Open 2019: September 1st Predictions

Predicted Winners in BOLD

ARTHUR ASHE STADIUM  (Noon start)

[3] Roger Federer (SUI) vs [15] David Goffin (BEL) – This could be a long match.  I think the 3 of 5 set format helps Federer.  Goffin played well in Cincinnati and Federer started slowly in his first two matches at the US Open.  If Federer cannot push Goffin backward, an upset may be in the offing.  I think the extra time a 3 of 5 set match affords Federer means he will likely solve and diffuse Goffin.

[8] Serena Williams (USA) vs [22] Petra Martic (CRO) – Serena should win, but I would not be shocked if this goes 3 sets.

[5] Elina Svitolina (UKR) vs. [10] Madison Keys (USA) – Keys winning would not be an upset.  This is probably the match of the day.

[1] Novak Djokovic (SRB) vs [23] Stan Wawrinka (SUI) – Novak and Stan have combined to win 4 US Open titles.  Stan is still working on reclaiming his best form.  Novak is playing exceptionally well.  I like Novak to win, but Stan has some big wins over the world #1 including the 2016 US Open final.

LOUIS ARMSTRONG STADIUM (11 a.m.)

[2] Ashleigh Barty (AUS) vs [18] Qiang Wang (CHN) – The #2 seed and 2019 Roland Garros champion should advance.  She is moving through the draw quietly but certainly is a contender.

[3] Karolina Pliskova (CZE) vs [16] Johanna Konta (GBR) – I really liked Pliskova’s game in 2016.  She did reach the semifinals at this year’s Australian Open, but she also seems a little one-dimensional when compared to some of the younger talents on the WTA Tour.  I think Konta has a decent chance to spring this upset so I am picking a veteran to knock out the 3rd seed.

[5] Daniil Medvedev (RUS) vs [Q] Dominik Koepfer (GER) – Can Medvedev play up his role as a heel and continue his strong summer?  I think so.

GRANDSTAND

Grigor Dimitrov (BUL) vs. Alex de Minaur (AUS) – Dimitrov can reclaim some career momentum with a quarterfinal or better finish at the US Open.
