US Open 2020: Men’s Semifinal Predictions

Predicted Winners in BOLD

20 P. Carreño Busta v. 5 A. Zverev – Zverev should win this match on a lot of fronts, but I do not doubt PCB’s intensity, fitness, or willingness to fight.  If PCB has a big comparative advantage in unforced errors, Zverev will need to either serve exceptionally exceptionally well to advance.  I am picking Zverev, but I have some reservations about doing so.

3 D. Medvedev v. 2 D. Thiem – Thiem was runner-up at the 2018 and 2019 Roland Garros events and nearly took the 2020 Australian Open.  He seems ready.  Medvedev has lost 0 sets through 5 matches.  Medvedev also nearly took home the 2019 US Open title.  Both men are playing quite well and seem more ready to win a major than anyone else on tour.  That does not mean either will win Sunday’s final.  I think Medvedev’s ability to adapt during a match gives him a slight edge today, but if Thiem is moving well and really controlling things with his forehand, it is easy to envision a different result.
