Barcelona 2015: Championship Prediction – Nishikori vs. Andujar

Pablo Andujar vs. Kei Nishikori

This is not the final anyone was expecting.  Kei Nishikori is the #1 seed and defending champion so he was supposed to be here.  Pablo Andujar is not the Spaniard most of us expected (Rafael Nadal) or the Spaniard many of us expected (David Ferrer).  Does Andujar have a chance?  My gut says not really. Obviously, Andujar has nothing to lose and a title in Barcelona would be a career defining win for most contemporary Spaniards.  I think Andujar has that going for him.  Andujar also owns a victory their only clay court meeting at Madrid in 2013.  Nishikori has grown a lot since 2013.  I think a repeat in Barcelona will set Nishikori up as a dark horse at Roland Garros.  It is odd to think of a top 10 player who reached a slam final in the previous 52 weeks as a dark horse, but until Rafa is beaten in Paris by someone other than Soderling he will at worst be a co-favorite.  I think Nishikori could pull an upset in Paris and perhaps prevent a Rafa-Nole showdown.

My Prediction: Kei Nishikori d. Pablo Andujar 7-6, 6-3
