Masters Madrid 2015: May 4 ATP Predictions

on

Predicted Winners in BOLD

[11] Feliciano Lopez (ESP) vs Benjamin Becker (GER) H2H – It is pretty amazing Becker is still out there given that his biggest moment came at the 2005 US Open.  On clay, Becker might even have a look at an upset vs. FLo.  Still, Lopez is playing the best tennis of his career, and I’m picking him even on clay.

Fabio Fognini (ITA) vs Santiago Giraldo (COL) H2H – Fognini has been quite unpredictable in 2015 minus his two stellar upsets of Rafa on clay!?!.  I could see this going either way as I think Fognini has the higher ceiling and lower floor.

[9] Marin Cilic (CRO) vs  Jiri Vesely (CZE) H2H – Vesely has had a nice clay court swing and Cilic is still somewhat on the mend so I will pick a mild upset.

[16] John Isner (USA) vs Adrian Mannarino (FRA) H2H – Madrid plays faster than most clay events.  Isner played well in Monte Carlo.  Therefore, I will take Isner, but Isner is far from a lock in my mind.

Jeremy Chardy (FRA) vs [Q] Thomaz Bellucci (BRA) H2H – I keep waiting on Bellucci to push into the top 30.  It has not really happened, but I think he has the tools to beat Chardy if he can get to Chardy’s backhand.

Ernests Gulbis (LAT) vs David Goffin (BEL)  H2H – A James Bond villain vs. a player from the Shire? Goffin gets a lot out of his game.  Gulbis is at best erratic.

Sam Querrey (USA) vs [Q] Thanasi Kokkinakis (AUS)  H2H Nothing like playing through qualifying rounds to draw a US player on clay.  Granted Querrey was runner-up in Houston, but I think the young Aussie has a good look at the 2nd round.

Steve Johnson (USA) vs [Q] Alejandro Gonzalez (COL) H2H – On a hard court, I would take Johnson.  I think Johnson understands clay well enough to win, but he is a slight underdog.

Jerzy Janowicz (POL) vs [LL] Joao Sousa (POR) H2H – Jerzy is one of my favorite personalities on tour, but he has yet to recapture some of his 2013 level of play.  Sousa is a lucky loser if my pick proves true.

Bernard Tomic (AUS) vs [Q] Luca Vanni (ITA)  H2H – Tomic seemed to have turned some sort of corner, but after his collapse in Miami, I need to see more from him before I pick him again.
