Predicted Winners in BOLD
Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS) vs Garbiñe Muguruza (ESP) – Kuzy is a tricky veteran who can win big on clay. At this stage of each of their careers, Muguruza should win, but will playing in Madrid inspire her or make her nervous. If she feels pressure to perform well in Spain, my pick is as good as toast.
Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) vs [Q] Christina Mchale (USA) – McHale has a nice enough game and is match tough from qualifying, but Woz should win.
Serena Williams (USA) vs Sloane Stephens (USA) – Match of the Day – Serena is more proven on clay even if it is her least favorite surface. They have played some fun matches on hard courts, but I think clay gives Serena an edge against a less experienced player from the US.
Agnieszka Radwanska (POL) vs Casey Dellacqua (AUS) – The Navratilova experiment never gathered any momentum. Generally, players initially do well after coaching changes.
Alizé Cornet (FRA) vs Roberta Vinci (ITA) – This should be a fun match, but I also think it is pretty evenly matched.
Andrea Petkovic (GER) vs Irina-Camelia Begu (ROU) – We know Petkovic can play well on clay from her 2014 results.
Lucie Safarova (CZE) vs Tsvetana Pironkova (BUL) – On grass, I might go the other way, but Safarova is a solid competitor on any surface.
Samantha Stosur (AUS) vs Kaia Kanepi (EST) – If Stosur is serving heavy and hitting that big forehand, she should win, but Sam has not done that with any frequency for several years.
