Cincinnati 2015: Novak Djokovic vs. Roger Federer Championship Prediction

Novak Djokovic vs. Roger Federer #41

These two have split their first 40 career matches.  A lot is on the line for each man heading into tomorrow’s final.  Roger Federer has a chance at a 7th Cincinnati title and the #2 seed for the US Open.  A #2 seed means Federer may only have to face either Djokovic or Murray to win the US Open rather than being seeded 3rd and needing on paper to beat both to take a 6th title at Flushing Meadows.  Novak has a chance to have at least one career title at ever Super 9/Masters Series/Masters 1000 event.  He’d be the first man to do this since the Super 9 distinction was created in 1990.  Also, Novak could close in on Rafa’s all-time Masters 1000 total.

Roger Federer looked out gunned versus Nole in Rome.  At the 2015 Wimbledon championship match, each man lost a tie-break set he likely should have won, but Novak controlled the final 2 sets to take his 9th major title.  Does Roger have a new wrinkle for challenging Nole?  Is the surface in Cincinnati going to play like it did in Dubai?  Is Nole healthy?  Will Roger attack Novak’s second serve in the bold manner he has done during the weak?

I think Federer and Edberg may have decided to throw caution to the wind by boldly attacking on second serves and ride Federer’s ability to hold serve.  I am not sure this will be enough to shift the tide with Novak.  Unless Novak is injured, sick, or nervous over completing his Masters 1000 set of trophies, I think Novak is the favorite.

My Prediction: Novak Djokovic d. Roger Federer 7-6, 6-3
