US Open 2015: Anderson vs. Wawrinka Quarterfinal Prediction

Kevin Anderson vs. Stan Wawrinka

For most of the 2015 hard court summer, both Anderson and Wawrinka struggled. Anderson did win a 250 level title in North Carolina the week before the US Open and has now posted the biggest win of his career with a 4 set victory over Andy Murray.  Wawrinka is in his 3rd consecutive US Open quarterfinal.  The Swiss is hoping to go two rounds further than he did in 2013.

Anderson has the bigger serve and demonstrated solid ground strokes and movement versus Andy Murray.  Stan has a big serve of his own, and he has the best one-handed backhand in tennis.  Stan reminds me of bull on a tennis court due to being able to produce so much power from his strong frame.  Anderson will need to serve big and force Stan to play defense more often than not.  Stan will need to direct a few returns with angles and keep his return of serve low when possible.

If either man has an off day serving, this match won’t be particularly close.  I think however this match is going to be a physical 4 or 5 set test.  I like Anderson’s chances, but I don’t like his chances well enough to pick him.  Stan Wawrinka has been in this situation more often and has the more complete game of the two.

My Prediction: Stan Wawrinka d. Kevin Anderson 7-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4
