US Open 2015: Serena Williams vs. Roberta Vinci Semifinal Prediction

Roberta Vinci vs. Serena Williams

Williams and Vinci Played Recently in Toronto

Serena Williams is a massive favorite here.  Williams is riding a 33 match winning streak at Major events and is chasing the Grand Slam.  Roberta Vinci is in her first ever US Open singles semifinal.  An underdog can normally count on some crowd support, but Serena Williams is from the US and has had a lot of support in New York since her first major title in 1999.  Does Vinci have any chance?

I joked earlier today that Roberta may need Leonardo da Vinci to invent a new racquet to have a chance at victory versus Serena Williams.  In all seriousness, I do not think Vinci’s prospects are quite that dire, but it is close.  Vinci has a blueprint for what to do from another doubles aficionado Bethany Mattek-Sands.  Mattek-Sands took a set off of Serena at the US Open and had a slight chance to close the match out in straight sets.  Mattek-Sands did this by playing a lot of doubles style shots and serving well.  If Vinci serves well and uses her slice backhand and a few unorthodox singles shots to junk up the match, Serena might hit a few errors and get off-balance in terms of her confidence.  If that happens, Vinci will have a chance to exploit any nerves Serena has and perhaps have a chance at winning.

Could this happen?

Will that happen?  It may happen at a micro level in a few instances during the match, but I cannot reasonably imagine this happening frequently enough for Vinci to shock the world.  Serena Williams is almost certainly going to win this match.

My Prediction: Serena Williams d. Roberta Vinci 6-3, 6-1

22 is in reach
