Rio Olympic Tennis: August 6 Men’s Singles Predictions

Predicted Winners in BOLD

Albert Ramos-Vinolas VS (4) Kei Nishikori – Kei should win, but his deep run in Canada may make an adjustment to Rio a bit slower than some other players’ process of adaptation.

Malek Jaziri VS (5) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga – I like Tsonga so long as he is feeling healthy.

(6) Gael Monfils VS Vasek Pospisil – Pospisil has a canon serve that gives him some chance.  Still, Monfils is having a great hard court summer and should win.

Grigor Dimitrov VS (9) Marin Cilic – Dimitrov showed signs of life in Toronto, and Cilic may still be in a haze over his Wimbledon quarterfinal loss.  Still, if Cilic is returning well, he should win.

Borna Coric VS (15) Gilles Simon – This is an intriguing match, but I think experience will help Simon.

(WC) Taro Daniel VS (14) Jack Sock – I am not sure how Sock is seeded, but I am also not sure how wild cards for olympic tennis work.  I am not picking any of the wild cards to win.

(13) Philipp Kohlschreiber VS Guido Pella – Kohlschreiber needs to impose his game, but if he gets out in front he should be fine.

(WC) Darian King VS (12) Steve Johnson – NCAA folkhero Steve Johnson has a chance to add to his trophy case as a bronze doesn’t seem totally out of the question.

Ricardas Berankis VS John Millman –  This match could go either way in my mind.

Brian Baker VS (WC) Yuichi Sugita – Again I am not picking any wild cards to win.  It is a great opportunity for Baker to be an olympian given his injury plagued career.

Damir Dzumhur VS Dudi Sela

Gastao Elias VS Thanasi Kokkinakis

Denis Kudla VS (WC) Andrej Martin – The US team drew a lot of wild cards.  This is good for their prospects in the first round.

Juan Monaco VS (WC) Mirza Basic – Monaco should win.

Jordan Thompson VS Kyle Edmund – Edmund is always flying under the radar, but he can play.

Andreas Seppi VS Illya Marchenko

Evgeny Donskoy VS Jan-Lennard Struff
