Rio Olympic Tennis: August 9th Women’s Singles Predictions

Predicted Winners in BOLD

KEYS Madison vs.  SUAREZ NAVARRO Carla – Keys will need to handle CSN’s backhand and variety, but I think if both are playing well Keys is the better player.

WILLIAMS Serena vs. SVITOLINA Elina – I don’t think this will be as one-sided as their Wimbledon semifinal was, but Serena should win this match due to Svitolina not having powerful enough weapons to hurt Williams.  Sorry about the brain freeze there.  Svitolina is a strong young talent who could win this match, but Serena has to be the favorite.

KUZNETSOVA Svetlana vs. KONTA Johanna – Konta has had a great summer hardcourt season, but I think this surface speed favors Kuznetsova.  Also, Kuznetsova has won two majors in singles, two majors in doubles, and been part of 3 winning Federation Cup teams.  I think Kuznetsova’s ability to mentally be at peace in the olympic setting is a big edge.

STOSUR Samantha vs. KERBER Angelique – Stosur’s biggest edge vs. Kerber is her serve. Kerber’s movement and left-handed shotmaking are her advantages.  I think Kerber is becoming comfortable with being in the top tier of women’s tennis.  A top tier player generally wins this match.

KVITOVA Petra vs. MAKAROVA Ekaterina – This one is very hard for me.  I think Makarova has the crafty problem solving sort of game that can undo Petra.  However, Kvitova has played some of her best tennis in Federation Cup as the two-time Wimbledon champion seems to play some of her best tennis when representing the Czech Republic.  Kvitova at her best or close to her best is better than Makarova.

MUGURUZA Garbine vs. PUIG Monica – As much as I like Puig’s game, I cannot see her as the favorite in this match-up.  Muguruza may be Serena’s biggest obstacle given the slow speed and high bounces of the courts in Rio.

ERRANI Sara vs. KASATKINA Daria – I’ve been wrong twice in picking against Errani.  I think she will win this match.

SIEGEMUND Laura vs. FLIPKENS Kirsten – Flipkens may ride a wave of momentum through this match.
