Monica Niculescu (ROU) vs. Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) – Wozniacki is showing signs of life after a rough 2016.  I am bullish on Romanian and German players at this US Open.

[8] Madison Keys (USA) vs [Q] Naomi Osaka (JPN)  – I like Keys’ potential for a final four run.

[2]  Angelique Kerber (GER) vs [Q] Catherine Bellis (USA) – Youth versus momentum?  I’ll take the world #2.

[7]  Roberta Vinci (ITA) vs. Carina Witthoeft (GER) – Vinci crushed McHale so maybe I am making this pick out of spite.

[14] Petra Kvitova (CZE) vs. [22] Elina Svitolina (UKR) – If Petra is playing well, this pick will look awful.  I just think Svitolina is less likely to play a bad match.

[13] Johanna Konta (GBR) vs [24] Belinda Bencic (SUI) – Konta’s Aussie run and title in Stanford demonstrate how strong she is on hard courts.

[12] Dominika Cibulkova (SVK) vs Lesia Tsurenko (UKR) – Cibulkova is a player no one should overlook.
