Predicted Winners in BOLD
Center Court (11 a.m. start)
[7] Grigor Dimitrov (BUL) vs. Juan Martin del Potro (ARG) H2H – This should be a fun match. I lean slightly toward Dimitrov because I always have concerns about JMDP’s wrist and backhand. Still, I think JMDP is the mentally stronger of the two.
[14] John Isner (USA) vs. [WC] Frances Tiafoe (USA) H2H – Isner won 2 events after Wimbledon (Newport and Atlanta), but I still favor Tiafoe to pull off an upset. I think the younger player can feel confident about holding his own serve versus Isner, and this will allow Tiafoe to get any kinks out ahead of a 1st set tiebreak.
[1] Rafael Nadal (ESP) vs. Albert Ramos-Vinolas – Rafa tends to punish his fellow Spaniards. I don’t think AVR will be over-awed, but I do think Rafa has more game.
[11] Pablo Carreno Busta (ESP) vs. David Ferrer (ESP) H2H – Ferrer can pull this upset (is it even an upset?).
[3] Dominic Thiem (AUT) vs. Adrian Mannarino (FRA) – Thiem needs to get his hardcourt legs under him, but if he does, watch out.
Nick Kyrgios (AUS) vs. Ivo Karlovic (CRO) H2H – Watch out is my only advice
Stadium 3
Karen Khachanov (RUS) vs. Yuichi Sugita (JPN) H2H – Each player has a great chance to reach the final 8.
Court 10
Nikoloz Basilashvili (GEO) vs. [WC] Jared Donaldson (USA) H2H – Normally, wildcards don’t reach the final 8 so I am picking the Georgian, but what an opportunity for both players as well.
