Chengdu Championship:
Marcos Baghdatis vs. Denis Istomin
This is a match between two players no one really likes seeing in their section of the draw. Neither tends to post consistent results, but both have the capability to win big matches. Istomin leads their head to head 2-1, but one of those wins was an early match retirement from Baghdatis. I think Istomin is the more stable player. Due to that, I think he is less likely to play poorly in the championship match.
My prediction: Istomin d. Baghdatis 7-6, 6-3
Shenzen Open Championship
[2] David Goffin (Bel) vs. [5] Alexandr Dolgopolov (UKR)
I like Goffin’s game a lot. I don’t dislike Dolgopolov, but he doesn’t always seem to have a clear idea of his goals on court. Dolgopolov’s seemingly random shot selection can throw people off. Also, Dolgopolov can be quite mobile and retrieve tough shots. All of this can be aggravating. Still, Goffin’s game is well adjusted for responding to Dolgopolov’s unpredictability and retrieving. I think Goffin wins in a fairly routine fashion.
My prediction: Goffin d. Dolgopolov 6-4, 6-3
